History as cyclical is an ancient assumption. There is some justification for it, but usually deeper into the phenomenology of time than its proponents realize. And in any case, USA is a republic, not a democracy.
Joachim of Fiore and St. Augustine before him observed a non-cyclical phenomenology in history. Generally speaking, Christian ecstatic philosophers, mystics, and theologians have united in supporting Fiore and Augustine in their observations in this particular. Ditto mystics of all religions, including Islam.
Vedas observe both cyclical and linear (forward ascending) phenomenology of history. So, one rejects neither circular nor linear (forward ascending) observations of historical telos.
The key to sorting this out is an ancient Greek distinction between time as chronos and time as kairos. When one looks at history in terms of clock time (chronos), one sees circular teleology. When one looks at the history in terms of the right time (kairos), one sees linear (forward and upward) teleology.
Many tie themselves in knots approaching the Bible as if it looks at history in terms of clock time. The Bible looks at history in terms of the right time, or in a common phrase, in the fulness of time. When we say of something, give it time, we reference time as kairos.
So yes, there is chronos, but no, a “cycle in history” is only part of the story, and in fact the lesser part for meaning and power.
The propagation of “conspiracy theories” over the years has established one supreme and incontrovertible fact: JFK went down to Leftist, not Rightist, malice. God knows our condition. Who’s to say we are not being given the chance, as were our ancestors, to relearn the value of freedom and re-earn having the same? Grabbing God is quicker and easier, and more efficacious for freedom, than is grabbing the U.S. Constitution or starting a lawsuit, or hoping some judge will decide some case some way or another.
Fear, anger, etc. — our own — we can do something about right now, here, where we are, within our abilities. At the top, Sundance calls for intelligent thinking, what theologians call discrimination. I second that. What goes on at DOJ or Brookings we can do nothing about, at least not unless we are in a very particular position at exactly the right time, the kairotic moment.
Well, if our heart is not clean, do we think God is going to let us be there for that? Of course not. His warriors are clean, they are confessed, shriven, before going into battle.
