Children used to read the Bible, often in KJV but other translations as well, to learn English.  This served multiple purposes, as one can imagine, all salutary.  Most importantly to my mind, it got generations exposed, even if indirectly, to the sublime locution of Jerome’s Latin and the central importance — to everything — of etymology.  And into the bargain they learned an English emphatically richer and more elegant than what they heard in street and, often, home … or Capitol.

It can be done today even.
