POTUS Trump’s basic campaign concept in re MENA — and to include Israel — is that USA has no strategic interest there, especially now with energy independence cum supremacy, unless someone there or from there is hurting us or trying to.

Israel’s strategic interests are in MENA with partners and/or allies such as Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Gulf States, Russia and KSA.  They can work out their own destinies.

USA’s sole strategic interest/problem in MENA at this time is Turkey.  See where NSC comes out on that one before rending shirts and shorts over NSC/McMaster.

For a century, no USA Administration has announced a rational USA grand national strategic objective in re MENA, meaning, one which reflects the sole responsibility of a USA administration: to exploit opportunities to guarantee USA national sovereignty.  (National security is never a responsibility because nothing in this world is secure or can be.  There is only opportunity.)

The smart move in re Turkey is to flank, go to Lavrov and ask what USA can do to help Russia achieve her objectives in Syria, to include deconfliction along the line of the Euphrates and north of Aleppo and protection of her assets on the Syrian coast and inland.  Then, when Russia is exploiting her opportunities in those areas — to include friendly relations with Kurds — ask Lavrov what USA can do to help Russia achieve her objectives in re Iran.  These include, among other friction surfaces, guarantee against Iran commandeering communications between Tehran and Beirut.

Then, tell Putin and Modi the three of us need to sit together for the purpose of deciding how to (1) remove obstacles inhibiting busy but quiet global communications and (2) increase the number of nations who operate as a multi-religious culture.  Because that is what the modern era is about: multi-religious nations.  USA, India and Russia are the world’s foremost exemplars of and therefore authorities regarding this era: each is a long-term, successful operator of a multi-religious culture.
