There is no American nationalism—a 19th century European ideology that developed in countries with overwhelming majorities of a single religion and/or ethnicity. The classic examples are France, England and Germany, all of which had largely homogeneous populations. There is an American counterpart, but it’s very different. We have patriotism, pride of nation, and that nation is defined by a distinctly anti-nationalist idea, since Americans belong to myriad religions and come in many colors, accents, and traditions. American patriotism—aka American exceptionalism—rests on the Declaration and the Constitution, not a national church or ethnic group.

What commentators term identity politics has now become normative, thanks to the Democrats indulging in it, and Trump is now aping them. It would be more correct to term this what it actually is: nationalism. Ethno-racial nationalism is an enormously potent political force; wise politicians know this and employ it cautiously. Nationalism arouses genuine passion and is a political motivator like no other, which it explains why a majority of white women voted for Trump, to the bitter consternation of outraged feminists.
Moreover, once nationalism becomes the main political factor, there’s no putting that troublesome genie back in the bottle. Politics become tribal, ethnic conflicts waged at the ballot box rather than on the battlefield. Having done most of my scholarly work on multiethnic societies like the Habsburg Empire and Yugoslavia, I can attest that the fires of nationalism, once stoked, are only put out with great difficulty—and that ethnically diverse societies that play games with nationalism are living dangerously. . . .
Trump’s winning our presidential election heralds a new era in American politics. The Democrats decided to bet everything on their emerging “new” America, and lost big. Obama’s two terms have overseen the destruction of the Democrats as a national party: they control nothing in Washington now and their performance at the state level is nothing short of dismal. Democrats dominate our big cities, California, and the Northeast—and little else. Barack Obama’s real legacy is putting Donald Trump in the White House.
There’s not much for Republicans to crow about, however, despite their enormous political windfall. Trump won precisely because he ignored or repudiated most longstanding “conservative” policies. Working-class whites have little interest in privatizing Social Security or open borders or engaging in endless losing wars in the Middle East. The GOP has changed, only their leaders seem not to have noticed. The Republicans are now the White party, de facto, whether they want to be or not. American politics will never be the same, and 2016 looks like a landmark election in the manner of 1980, 1932, or 1860, each of which transformed the United States.

I think Ledeen is right and Schindler is wrong. Very right and very wrong, respectively. And I think the matter at trial could not be more clearly put than as between patriotism and nationalism. And I think Ledeen, at least in this particular, is a far superior historian, meaning, reader of the geography of human hearts.
A literary sign that Ledeen is right is this: he makes his point in one elegant paragraph whereas Schindler uses four sprawling ones to make his.
I think Schindler means that Talmudic socialism, and its conservative proponents, which and who have governed USA policy, education and penal (governmental) machinery for generations, just had their head-lock on America broken. Or to put it otherwise, just found out they are not as potent and not as successful as they imagined. Shiva just landed upon them, dancing wildly but for a reason and with a purpose: freedom!
Schindler’s intellect went south before the election and maintains that vector still. Trump’s support is not nationalist, which means of one race and one religion. The USA has never been nationalistic, especially since the Civil War Between the States. The USA is patriotic, meaning, multi-racial and multi-religious as one nation E Pluribus Unum. That is Trump’s support. Schindler is with Kristol and Podhoretz, having failed to ignite a domestic religion war in the USA, they are trying now to ignite a domestic racial one. Go to, boys, go to!
Americans are patriotic.
Americans are not nationalistic.
Patriotism can be grasped and practiced in several ways. These are two of them:
1- Patriotism is the men of a country taking responsibility for her as her fathers, Fathers of their Country, ongoing, generation to generation.
2- We, each of us, have seven mothers. Our country of birth is one of them. In that aspect of our life, The Almighty is our Father, and our loyalty to Him and His Bride, our Mother Country, is our patriotism.

Update 14: I think these so-called elites are really stupid. Up and down are the reverse of what elites say they are. The elites are the thugs, bottom dwellers, sub-civilized, unrefined boors, lower selves.
The smart ones are those who are tolerant, not ambitious, gentle, kind, fair, careful, loving, studious, who cultivate the happiness of their families, pray without ceasing and accept and savor the circumstances of their life. I think elites have a rendezvous with the confessional, like it or not.
Americans are the smart ones. We have no orders of nobility. We make our way in this breathing world. And a fine way it is.
Ischinger is saying, among other things, that if USA makes bilateral agreements with current EU countries or with Russia without EU concurrence on USA’s side (multilateralism), EU will come fully apart. He is right about that.
And he is also saying that USA going bilateral in Europe and Russia kills NATO and therefore is war on the EU conceived as a unified entity (which it is not). He is right about that, too.
And that is why he and EU mandarins are not reassured by VPOTUS Pence’s language that USA supports NATO and EU. He knows that USA going bilateral in and around Europe ends NATO and EU. And they are right about that, too.
No, looking at it coldly, I’d say the EU/NATO goose is just about home-fried. Better they should prepare to win such war as they feel descending upon them. The actual war descending upon them, did they but know it, is civil war, not inter-nation war. To that fact they are marvelously oblivious.
I just hope the Trump administration does not jump in USA blood and treasure to save the poor dumb bastards from themselves for a third time in a century.
Update 15: Mark Hamilton: You are babbling in ignorance and confusing the issue. Tanks mean nothing. Intent does. Russia has no intent of moving west. Never has except as opportunistically during WWII and through subversion following WWII. But subversion is not armed invasion.
