Who is making this terrorism … actually, ancient, ordinary Caliphism contemplating, again, world-hegemony by conversion, enslavement or extermination … happen?  Apparently lots and lots of people do not know, are still unconcerned, are wondering, are casting about for an explanation or are simply denying the phenomenology.

Eli Lake: It’s possible to imagine a world in the future where American presidents would speak plainly about radical Islam. It would likely be a world in which the U.S. stopped waging a global war on terror.

No, any American President can wage war on and defeat Caliphists with or without allied nations in the Middle East.  The USA is not a beggar nation, not yet, not ever.  Nor is she tied down by Caliphist sensibilities.  The USA is a sovereign nation state with power adequate to her needs and those of friendly nation states.  An American President would act on that basis and the whole world, including nations in the Middle East, would shout Hooray!

America’s true allies at this time and into the future are India and Russia.

Update 2: The savage idolatry of a man and a book customarily denominated as Islam will be defeated by Christians, Hindus and so some extent Buddhists, as before, and by no one else. The smart move would be for USA, Russia and India to join forces to second al-Sisi’s insights in this regard.  Those three are the principal targets of the clerics al-Sisi reproaches and thus have common ground here.  Al-Sisi says “No!” to reconstitution of 7th Century Arab avaricious murder.

Conjecture 3: The War on Terror is the ‘Golden Hour’ — the final chance

It is supremely ironic that the survival of the Islamic world should hinge on an American victory in the War on Terror, the last chance to prevent that terrible day in which all the decisions will have already been made for us. That effort really consists of two separate aspects: a campaign to destroy the locus of militant Islam and prevent their acquisition of WMDs; and an attempt to awaken the world to the urgency of the threat. While American arms have proven irresistible, much of Europe, as well as moderates in the Islamic world, remain blind to the danger and indeed increase it. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad recently “told an international conference of young Muslim leaders … (that) … Muslims must acquire skills and technology so they can create modern weapons and strike fear into the hearts of our enemies”. Fecklessness and gunpowder are a lethal combination. The terrible ifs accumulate.

Update 7: An interesting comment string arose at Instapundit when Glenn Reynolds referenced Mark Cunningham on the subject of what The Fraud should say about Islam.  I commented as follows, making an important observation regarding the effect of religion on affairs:

Were I to take Cunningham’s essay as serious thought — and I think it is not — I would say his face is too close to the canvas, he has seen a couple of swirls of paint and yelled, “Eureka!” Were he serious, he would pull back to ponder the whole canvas or at least more of it than has caught his fancy. His enthusiasm would, shall we say, moderate.

Serious, productive thought cannot come from other than a monastic. Men and women bearing the daily burdens and cares of life, such as Cunningham, simply cannot and will not create intellectual and moral forms that benefit anyone lastingly. They are too busy, and justly so, one hopes. Such men and women can use such forms once they are created, but create them they can not and will not. Those stepped way back from the canvas — monastics — do that. The truth is the whole.
