A brilliant essay, demonstrating that Nominalists (nurture) resort to Realist (nature) assertions to support, they assert, their Nominalism. Often Tillich mentions this irony. Both nature and nurture develop a personality, of course, and nature is the more fundamental or original of the two factors, both desirable. Ideally, nurture leads forth nature — education — making nature shine. Realists believe, accurately, that, nature shining will be a good and pleasant thing. Nominalists fear nature brought forward will be bad and repulsive, so they try as long as they can — which is not long — to deny nature and cause nurture to suppress nature, which they fear, by force, using planned choice architecture. Realists are confident of human capacity and nature. Nominalists fear both and want to manage both for that reason.

Oppenheimer — a KGB deep operator — argued for unilateral US nuclear disarmament on grounds of “setting a good example” that would convince the Soviet to do likewise. After hearing Oppie out once in these terms, Dean Acheson remarked to an aide in exasperation, “How can you persuade a paranoid adversary [the Soviet] to disarm ‘by example?’” Of course, Oppie’s mission was to nudge US policy to aid Soviet expansion.
Today’s red diaper babies and grand-babies use Oppie’s argument to nudge US policy to aid vectors promising to undo American institutions and strip out American self-confidence. Inviting the Muslim Brotherhood to reconnoiter US defense facilities and procedures is right in line with that. Bill Clinton did the same and more for the Chinese.
Update 8: However, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that no such star is high on the list of those being mentioned.
Assuming those stars actually have light sufficient for a career of staring, I’m glad none is on Trump’s short list — precisely because they are political stars, careerist professional politicians!!!
I’d like in office anyone BUT a professional politician, anyone BUT one who craves the office, anyone who is NOT thinking about THEIR future. The very mind-set which produces the concept of a political star with a future I find smug, anxious, cynical, elitist, and un-American.
If you want my vote because you want your concept of a career for yourself, you don’t give a damn about my soul and you don’t deserve my vote. You deserve the sole of my shoe.
