The Question
I’ve not been able to follow the initial development of the current Israeli-Lebanese conflict. Why now, beginning on the same day as Iran had a deadline with the UN? Is this something of a proxy war between the US-Iran? Does Israel typically begin a war when their soldiers are captured? Is Assad’s placement of Syrian troops on heightened alert a bluff? Do you expect Iranian supplied block-buster missiles to be used, and if so will Iran be directly drawn into the conflict? Is PM Olmert the person calling the shots?
And a really tricky one for me: does Israel have the right to the land that causes it’s existence as a country? I think you’ve said that since we set it up we are obliged to defend it but is it an ultimately losing cause? I mean this question not to defend Hizbollah but to ask if Israel will still be there in 50 years.
The brain wonders.
The Answer
All superb questions, spot on the heart of the issue.
Beginning with the last one, because the rest rise from it, does Israel have a right to the land it is legally today? I will rephrase it: do Jews have a right to own Palestine that supersedes all other rights of all other religions and the groups those religions engender?
And behind that rephrasing is a realization that has been brewing for some time — since the Religion Parks (and here) presentation ended with the insight that the forms of the religions, today, are the nation states they have produced … meaning the churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, etc. are NOT the forms of religions except as they express the will and yearnings of the nation states.
So, rephrasing again — as you know, it is important to get the question right, meaning, from the deepest, most subtle and therefore most powerful principle (= that which originates, supports and stamps the character of all that follows from it) or fundament:
Does Judaism have a right to The Land of Canaan, which in modern terminology (Palestine/Israel) is the Roman designation of the Land of the Jews and still underlies modern legal and informal usage?
The answer is “No.”
The prophets — who are the standard of Judaism, Christianity and Islam — declare emphatically and with one voice over the period of the post-Davidic Monarchies in Israel (area north of Jerusalem) and Judah (Jerusalem and area south) that YHWH (God) does not need land and that his people are not defined by land — although, importantly, they are defined as a nation, His Nation!
(Those Monarchies were united by Rome into Judea and Samaria, although Greeks previously had made moves in that direction. The Romans were neat folks regarding territory, precise, made governing easier than it is when trying to accommodate tribal vagaries, especially when the tribes are nomadic.)
So the question arises, can a nation exist without land? The prophets think so. Of what are they thinking, then?
They are thinking of an historical phenomenon in contrast to a merely terrestrial and legal one, an actuality that is God-created, God-sustained and God-fulfilled in history in the sense of through or across the millennia, and enfolding in transcendent unity all conditions associated with the rise and fall of nation states, groups of any kind, legal and economic systems, aesthetic forms, philosophies, theologies, armies and the prophetic spirit itself.
The nation they are thinking of, of course, is the New Being, He Himself in forms appropriate to expectations and requirements, who enters the arena of life, lives it fully, to include death, and reunites all life, to include death, unambiguously, though anticipatorily and fragmentarily, in Himself.
Now, this New Being or nation can have the name of one of several religions — particularly one of the five great religions but also the name of one of the eleven lesser religions — or it can have a name given by those who have responded to the Divine Presence in the New Being but not the name of a religion (for example United States, England, Iraq, etc.)
Now, Judaism is not a separate religion. It is a dependency of Christianity. It is a repository of descendants of those who, for various reasons, could not accept the New Being in Jesus as the Christ but who nonetheless represent the religion of the prophets — which became first Christianity and later also Islam — through the millennia and so deserve honor and accommodation for that reason.
In the 19th Century there was a chap named Herzl:
Herzl was of East European (Ashkenazi) Jewish descent and not a rabbi. For some centuries before him, periodic attempts had been made by rabbis to induce the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Egypt to grant Jews a homeland on traditional ground — Judea and Samaria, aka Palestine/The Land of Canaan. Some rational basis for doing this was in Moslem minds because the Arabs living in Palestine were regarded by other Arabs as outcasts, hopeless or outright bastards, the blacks of the Arab orbit. So non-Palestinian Arabs regard them today, notwithstanding public comments regarding their Palestinian brethren.
But the efforts prior to Herzl were unsuccessful. Genetically, this is because Arabs claimed Jews are insufficiently Semite, that they are now Slavic or Germanic, and the Levant and Arabia are for Semites only. Spiritually, this was because Jews are not in the orbit of Islam — as is clear today. Islam did not have authority to grant his wish, which he termed Zionism. (Zion is the spiritual name for Jerusalem, which means, My God is the Sun.) Since the time of Jesus, despite their refusal to accept him as the Christ, Jews are and will forever remain in the Christian orbit. They are not and never will be an orbit on their own. Judaism has no standing apart from its supporting Christian context.
So when WWI came along and the Ottoman Empire was defeated — primarily by England (Lawrence, Allenby, etc) on its own and with support of Arab irregulars — Herzl’s followers found reason to push the Jewish Homeland idea again — but this time at the British Foreign Office, which eventually gave permission in principle — the Balfour Declaration — which was later translated gradually into fact, by diplomacy and by action on the ground.
The WWI victors unanimously supported this gradual but effective establishment of the Jewish Homeland — Lawrence, however, says the British Army, including both himself and Allenby, did not. The Christian countries had the spiritual, moral, political and material means to make that happen. They alone had those means — because Judaism is in the Christian orbit and in no other and has no orbit of its own. They used those means and still use those means and likely will continue using them indefinitely and until the Arabs tire of their obduracy and start living in peace with the State of Israel — as they will do, and can only do.
A demonstration of this circumstance is the fact that under Jewish stewardship the land of Palestine blossoms with all essentials of life, whereas, for centuries and continuing today, the same land under Palestinian Arab stewardship is desolate and despicable.
So when I say Israel has no right to exist, I mean not on its own, not as an independent Jewish entity. There is no independent Jewish entity. It DOES have a right to exist, however, in view of the will of the Christian nations who enabled and continue to support it. It is a sovereign nation so long as it is supported by the Christian orbit, which to me appears to be indefinitely, and should be so.
Arab and Persian enemies of Israel see this fact more clearly than we do. They always link the Jewish entity with the crusaders. They are right. The State of Israel depends absolutely on the authorship and succor of the Christian nations.
The Latinate countries — directly by the US, England and other mainly English-speaking nations and indirectly by other Christianity-sourced nations — undertook to clean out the Middle East cesspool after 11SEP01.
Like all cesspools, this one had several layers of muck.
The first and obvious layer was Saddam and his supports, mainly tribal. That layer has been cleaned out at least in principle.
The second layer — the one arousing the long-needed cleaning action — was al Qaeda and its supports. That layer has been cleaned out mostly but definitely in principle.
The third layer was the Arab criminal underworld. This layer is deeper than the first two and underlies both of them. The Arab underworld is the origin for both the Baathists and al Qaeda. Cleaning it is an ongoing effort that is costly and difficult but it will be accomplished. Cleaning it involves re-orienting a culture, Arab culture, the source of nations, not just a nation or set of nations. Also, the underworld is never completely eliminated in any case, as terrorist states and groups can be.
The fourth layer, deepest and thickest of all, and most dangerous, is the Shiite heresy. This is the layer which has recently become visible and thus agitated and aggressive because its covering layers have been removed enough to expose it. Hamas, though Sunni, is effectively a Shiite client, at least for the moment. Hizbollah is Shiite absolutely. And so is Sadr. All Arab Shiites (Hizbollah and Sadr and Hamas effectively) at this point are Iranian clients. That may also include the current Prime Minister of Iraq, Nouri al Maliki.
Who is calling the shots in the Middle East at this point? The boys at Qom, Iran. This is what has people like Victor Hanson and Ralph Peters worried. Well they should be. The US Army does not play on someone else’s field unless fear grabs media, politicians and their patrons and forces the Army to do that.
On the other hand, the boys in Qom are calling the shots because if they are not successful in so doing they are toast. They are compelled to take the initiative because the light is on them, the layers of muck that have hidden them and their clients from view has been cleaned off, mostly, by Coalition Forces, so they are exposed, like rats. They have to attack. And they will continue to attack with ever-increasing ferocity until they are defeated and driven into uninhabitable areas. Desperate battles are ahead.
Effectively, we have fought now four successive wars, first against the illusion of Pan-Arab Nationalism (Saddam), then against the illusion of Pan-Muslimism or Caliphism (al Qaeda), then against the cynicism of Caliphist criminality and now against the root cause of specifically Muslim disquiet, the heresy of Shiia.
This phenomenon of four successive wars, the first three won in principle and the fourth now exercising our leaders’ thoughts on how seriously to take it, is our condition today. Our leaders’ coming so late to consider the desperate dangerousness of Shiia, driven by religious heresy, is such a dangerous condition that it has insightful people such as Hanson and Peters genuinely concerned for the welfare of our Republic, as I think they should be, and for the reason they are.
Latinate nations’ implacable refusal to consider religion and its deformities of any consequence in the academic, scientific, economic and political orbits is a colossal stupidity that threatens our existence itself. There is no way of or desirability in veiling its dangerous consequences. I think we will get over it — probably after a hefty Iranian attack in this country, Iraq and/or Israel … but at what cost comes belated truth recognition — ??!!
Sadr and Nasrallah need to be dead, PDQ.
At this point the main concern is that the Israelis are not hitting Hizbollah hard enough, not lethally. Krauthammer also is exercised on this point and he is Jewish. I also am exercised by it. (Hizbollah means Party, in the sense of political party, of God and is the name of the party controlling Iran at present.)
Of course, strong actions undoubtedly are occurring behind the reports but at the moment at least Hizbollah has the definite upper-hand in the media, not in the sense of approval but in the sense of spreading, through the media, — who always think they know better than anyone what is and what should be occurring — the paralysis of fear to act in the civilian base of its enemies, both Israel and USA/EU.
Besides the usual preening themselves on omniscience and omnipotence, journalists and their editors additionally in these days are presuming to govern the nation directly from their electronic devices. Incontent as the Fourth Estate, they fancy themselves today the First Estate. Among businessmen of all industry and commerce they are not alone in that presumption.
So I think in conclusion that it is a time for quiet trust in the divine providence — Swami has the situation in hand — and doing our duty and whatever else we see needs doing that appeals to us as helpful to the end of winning decisively all four of the aforementioned wars in which we are engaged, not of our choice but certainly of necessity.
The deformations of religions (called heresies) are the enemy. Shiia is one such, the most dangerous of today’s several heresies, although the already defeated heresy of Communism follows closely behind while going under such banners as liberation movement, progressivism, activists, democracy advocates, environmentalism, green, rights advocates, peace and justice, peace movement, peace activists, etc.
In order for there to be a Golden Era, which is definitionally a theonomous condition expressing genuine religion, the deformations of religion must be defeated and driven into the uninhabited areas, just as the emendations foisted on a great work of art must be wiped off before the grandeur of the work may be experienced, before it enriches humanity.
Arabs and Iranians have much good and grandeur to contribute to humanity, but the multi-layered cesspool in which they reside must be cleaned out before they can be who they are and do what they do.
They now cannot and will not do it themselves, just as the Japanese circa 1940 could not and would not.
By fits and starts, this is what is going on. The cleaning. In philosophical terms, it is the cleaning of the buddhi, the burnishing of the intellect. Wahhab feared the European Enlightenment would subvert Caliphism and prescribed extreme puritanism as the means not only to resist the Enlightenment but also to defeat it at war.. He was right about the Enlightenment’s threat to Caliphism and wrong about puritanism being able to defeat reason.
The legitimate religious and governmental authority in Arab culture is the Hashemite Dynasty and Kingdom. Both Iraq and Arabia Deserta, which is deemed Saudi Arabia by the Saud family, who usurped it from Hashemite stewardship, should be returned to the stewardship of the Hashemite Dynasty as territories of the Hashemite Kingdom.
