Today is 2019. It is not 1953. Land war in China and against China is now a rational problem set, not an irrational renunciation of sanity.
China is in the grip of aggressive, hegemonic imperialists of the Socialist cast. The arms behind their grip are stretching to the east, south, north, and west and growing gripping hands at their extremities as they proceed. Their proceedings will not stop until they are stopped. Until Chinese Socialists renounce their appetite for aggressive, hegemonic imperialism, the world is at war. And war far more capable than anything the Salafi-Shiite Jihad with their Socialist allies in the USA and EU can cook up.
When one contemplates defeating or at least neutralizing the rampant hegemon in the INDO-PACIFIC region, one is looking at a ground-based problem set, not a water-based one. The Army should be moving the Navy, not the Navy the Army. Ground-based needs, geographical necessities, dictate deployments of the joint force. Any hegemon, rampant or not, and especially a globally ambitious one, is a ground force adversary par excellence and therefore a ground force responsibility par excellence.
China is an artillery problem first up. A long range artillery problem. Thus, ground force addressing China moves forward behind air, ballistic submarine, space, and cyber forces, which are, in order of increasing range, forward artillery.
Naval surface/Marine, submarine, and aviation force is, mostly, a military pathway clearing asset, as it is essentially for commercial seaborne traffic as well.
Pacific Pathways are pathways for the Army, to and through China, that are broken and held open by forward artillery and pathway cleaners: Navy/Marine, Air Force, Space Force, and Cyber Force components of the joint force.
The INDOPACOM region, therefore, is an array of opportunities to station US ground combat forces aside the throat and into the belly that communicates nourishment to Chinese Socialists’ appetite for aggressive, hegemonic imperialism.
INDOPACOM and Pacific Pathways are premised as an Army show supported by the unique assets of the joint force. The premise of that premise is that land war in China and against China is a rational problem set.
