Did Comey intend to be fired?
I replied:
Good question, has been on my and others’ minds for some weeks now. I think it possible but am not close enough to guess.
In any case, I think it an unremarkable event, certainly no crisis or major news. Routine D.C. operations so far as I can see. Nothing extraordinary or worth more than passing notice. A mole hill for sure, no mountain, hysterical propagandists notwithstanding.
Were I to describe this event, I would call it an epiphenomenon of Thandava. Of no more importance than that. The Dance, not Its epiphenomena, is the focus of attention, or should be.
To Steven’s post itself I commented:
Concur, Bill did not want her to be POTUS. There could be several reasons he would have that in mind. But I think you are right: Bill lost the election for Hill, and deliberately. That must be the truth they all know and cannot face.
If she is not pursued now by DOJ, I would suspect that would be the fundamental reason: professional courtesy, to let those two withered criminals fall off into exile, so long as they shut up and disappear.
Only, I doubt Hillary can do that. So a DOJ pursuit of her I would guess is a bit more than possible now. Plenty of lusty Democrat females — Kamala Harris? — would not object, at least not in private.
With respect, Paul, it seems to me that an ad pejorem speculation regarding the report (wasn’t it via Politico, that firehose of fact?) of POTUS fury regarding the investigation is no more or less compelling than an ad meliorem one. There are numerous occasions for fury regarding said investigation, some fully justifying that response.
What kind of fury, upon which occasion, at what object, to what end?
I do not know. How could I know? I cannot bring myself to speculate meaningfully, in no small measure because WaPo bears the tidings.
I am inclined to credit POTUS’s own statement of a reason for firing the Director: the Director was not doing his job. In Trump-Land, that is reason enough for leaving it, and not necessarily under pursuit by fury. That is well-known. And I believe that POTUS’s statement there left unmentioned something the Director was doing that justifiably infuriated his boss and demanded the Director’s immediate termination. Something not about Russia, something personal and political, utterly outside the Director’s brief and the investigation.
If POTUS Trump is furious, upon whatever occasion, I am confident he has good reason to be and will reliably put it to good use. There is such a thing as righteous wrath, as all parents and other leaders know full well. And if Politico is talking about something, whatever that is, I am confident it is a lie or dissembling. At West Point, dissembling is treated as a lie. Perhaps other seats of higher learning do as well.
