Countrymen,

This was done by monastic orders, especially of nuns, in the Medieval periods of Europe and I think later also. Foundlings are a constant of history — Shirdi Sai Baba was one — sometimes more of them, sometimes less. So, appropriate to rear them. Better they were reared by The Church and reliable foster parents, but in that absence, today, this is probably the way to go.
