Nub Of An Idea: On Character

RAMANAM
In the Name of The Father, and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit, Amen.

Countrymen,

A thought has been running through my mind of late: many, high and low, are using free speech to kill free speech.  That is, they are using free speech to hide or override truth.  If free speech is not directed at truth but at something less, then its exercise is dangerous.  If free speech results not in equanimity but in faction, then, again, its exercise is counter-civilizational.  Subversives deceive by using good qualities — free speech, democracy, equality, fairness — to extirpate those qualities.  So what matters really is not those qualities so much as the character and intention that drive their use.  Now, talk about having character and subversives will get really angry.  A high school classmate of our son’s volunteered to him once, “You’re lucky, you have character.”
