Animal Gratitude

RAMANAM
In the Name of The Father, and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit, Amen.

Countrymen,

Young girl in Seattle feeds crows, receives thank you gifts.

Yes, crows we fed years ago did this also, as did the raccoons.  Crows brought shiny things, as here, raccoons brought perfectly smooth rocks from the stream bed.  We raised several crows who had fallen from their nests as babies.  When, months later, we took them outside for flight trials, their parents were right there, took over if their young one was able to reach a tree limb.  If not, we brought them back inside and reared them more until they could.  All made it to the trees eventually and all were greeted by their parents, immediately (!) we brought them out of the house.

Animals have every emotion we have.  And gratitude, love, protection, fright, jealousy and anger included.  What they do not have, or live in, as we do, is the dimension of power and meaning, the dimension of spirit.  They do not ponder uses of power relative to structures of meaning.  Only humans do that in the whole of creaturedom.  That is our exceptionalism.
