Democratic society depends absolutely, as all know, on a well-informed citizenry with tastes sufficiently refined (educated) to discriminate between what is good for individual and whole together and what is not and to have opportunity to select the former and reject the latter.

Those essential conditions of a democratic society (education and refined sensibilities) do not exist in what used to be the United States.
